According to a recent report from the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), the Ford F-250 Super Duty crew-cab is a new favorite target for thieves. It’s not surprising, seeing that 5 of the top 10 vehicles targeted by thieves, based on number of insurance claims, are pickups. The other pickups on the list include the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew-cab, GMC Sierra 1500 crew-cab, Ford F-350 crew-cab and the GMC Sierra 1500 extended cab (full list available at end of article).
The HLDI does not distinguish between thefts from within the vehicle or theft of the entire vehicle, and the average amount paid by the insurance company for these trucks is much lower than the total value of the truck. This means that while trucks are targeted more often, thieves are going after cargo and not stealing the entire truck. This is a major issue for those who use their trucks for work applications, like contractors or construction workers, who are putting their valuable tools in their truck beds.
